What should you know about diver diverticulitis?

Short answer

Diverticulitis is inflammation or infection affecting small pouches in the bowel wall, and it can cause steady abdominal pain with changes in bowel habit.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the term describes

Small pouches called diverticula can form where the bowel wall is weaker. Their presence alone is called diverticular disease or diverticulosis; diverticulitis means that a pouch and nearby tissue have become inflamed. Pain is often felt in the lower abdomen, but its location and intensity vary.

Constipation, loose stools, bloating, fever, nausea, or reduced appetite may accompany the pain. Similar symptoms can come from other bowel or urinary problems, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. A clinician may examine your abdomen and decide whether tests are needed.

What you can do now

Arrange a GP Consultation if pain is persistent, recurring, or accompanied by a change in bowel habit. Until assessed, rest, drink fluids if you can, and choose foods that you tolerate. Avoid taking laxatives or anti-inflammatory pain medicines without advice when significant abdominal pain is present.

Treatment depends on severity and the findings. A clinician may recommend observation, symptom relief, dietary changes, or prescribed medicine. Once the acute episode has settled, gradual fibre changes and a Nutrition Counselling discussion may help create a plan that suits your bowel symptoms.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent assessment for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a hard or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, faintness, or blood in the stool. Fever with worsening pain also needs prompt review because inflammation can sometimes spread beyond the bowel.

Questions to take with you

Ask whether your symptoms fit diverticulitis or another cause, whether tests are needed, which pain medicines are suitable, and when to change your diet. Tell the clinician about bowel changes, previous episodes, medicines, and any blood or fever.

Questions people ask

Is diverticulitis the same as diverticular disease?

No. Diverticular disease describes pouches in the bowel; diverticulitis refers to inflammation affecting a pouch and nearby tissue.

Should I treat the pain at home?

Mild symptoms still deserve medical advice if they persist or recur. Severe pain, vomiting, fever, or bleeding requires urgent assessment.
