People may use “type” to mean a wavelength, a machine model, or a delivery style. Diode systems are often described by their emitted wavelength, while some handpieces combine more than one wavelength. Other differences include a small or large treatment spot, contact cooling, air cooling, and how pulses are delivered. These features change how quickly an area can be covered and how heat is managed.

Hair colour, thickness, density, and skin tone influence how much light is absorbed. Light hair may respond differently from dark hair because the target is pigment. A clinician should select the system and settings after examining the area rather than choosing by a label alone.

Ask the provider to name the system and explain why it suits your skin and hair. Mention tanning, pigment changes, medicines that make skin light-sensitive, cold sores near a facial area, and any rash or infection. Follow advice about shaving, sun avoidance, and stopping products that irritate the skin. Protective eyewear should be used whenever the treatment requires it.

A test spot can show how your skin reacts before a larger area is treated. Mild warmth or redness may settle, but aftercare should be specific to your device and skin response.
