What should you know about diode laser power?

Power is one part of laser dosing. The clinician also considers pulse duration, spot size, repetition rate, cooling, hair thickness, skin tone, recent tanning, and the body site. More power is not automatically better: excessive heat can injure the epidermis, while insufficient energy may provide little follicle effect. The treatment sensation can range from warmth or snapping to stronger discomfort, depending on the area and settings.

Diode laser hair removal works by directing light toward pigment in the hair. The resulting heat must be controlled so the follicle is affected without overheating nearby skin. Because hair grows in cycles, a single session cannot address every hair equally.

Tell the clinician about recent sun exposure, tanning products, medicines that increase light sensitivity, a history of unusual scarring, and any active rash or infection. Follow instructions about shaving and avoid waxing or plucking if the plan depends on hair remaining in the follicle. During treatment, report sharp burning rather than tolerating it silently; the operator can pause, cool the area, or reassess the settings.

Use gentle aftercare and protect treated skin from strong sun while it settles. Do not judge the result only by immediate shedding or redness; the response is assessed over time and across planned sessions.

Get advice if pain intensifies after treatment, redness spreads, blisters or crusts develop, or light and dark marks persist. Urgent assessment is appropriate for facial or eye pain, vision changes, marked swelling, fever, or drainage. Stop further treatments until a clinician has reviewed a significant reaction.
