What should you know about digital pet scan?

In oncology, PET is often combined with CT so areas of tracer uptake can be matched to body structures. Uptake is not interpreted as cancer by itself because normal organs, inflammation, infection, healing, and some tumours can show different patterns.

A small amount of radiotracer is given, commonly a glucose-related tracer called FDG. After an uptake period, the scanner detects signals from the tracer and a computer reconstructs them into images showing where it accumulated.

The report considers the distribution and intensity of uptake, the CT appearance, earlier scans, current treatment, and clinical information. PET may help assess the extent of known disease, investigate an uncertain finding, plan management, or evaluate response, depending on the cancer and clinical question.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about fasting, water, medicines, exercise, and arrival time because these details can affect tracer distribution. Tell the team beforehand if you have diabetes, could be pregnant, are breastfeeding, need help lying still, or recently had treatment, infection, or surgery.

Wear comfortable clothing and mention devices or metal that could affect the CT portion. Afterward, follow the centre's advice about fluids, toileting, and close contact with others while the tracer clears. Keep the report available for the clinician who requested the scan.

Tell staff immediately if you feel unwell during the injection or scan. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or a severe and rapidly worsening reaction after leaving the department.

Contact the referring clinician if the report is not available when expected or if symptoms worsen while you await results. The urgency should be based on the symptom itself; a scan finding must be interpreted by the care team before conclusions are drawn.

Ask what clinical question the scan is meant to answer, whether it includes CT contrast, how recent treatment could influence uptake, when results will be discussed, and whether the finding needs comparison, another imaging test, sampling, or observation.
