Diffuse liver metastases

This description concerns the pattern of spread, not where the cancer began. Doctors use imaging, blood tests and sometimes tissue testing to confirm the origin, assess liver function and plan care.

Cancer cells can reach the liver through the bloodstream or lymphatic system. A diffuse pattern may involve both lobes and can make treatment directed at a single spot less suitable. The number, distribution and size of deposits matter, as do the cancer type, its molecular features, disease elsewhere and how well the liver is working.

Symptoms vary. Liver metastases may present with reduced appetite, fatigue, discomfort under the right ribs, nausea, abdominal swelling, itching or jaundice. Some people have few symptoms and the deposits are first seen on a scan.

The oncology team reviews previous pathology, scans, medicines and blood tests. Treatment often needs to act throughout the body, although liver-directed procedures may still be considered for selected areas or particular clinical goals. Options can include chemotherapy, other systemic medicines, ablation, surgery, radiotherapy or symptom-focused care.

Take an updated medicines list to appointments and report changes in eating, pain, bowel habits, swelling or alertness. The team can also address nausea, itch, nutrition and discomfort while cancer treatment decisions are being made.

Contact the treating team promptly for new jaundice, increasing abdominal swelling, persistent vomiting, fever, worsening pain or difficulty keeping fluids down. Seek emergency care for confusion, marked drowsiness, vomiting blood, black stools, severe breathlessness or collapse.
