Difficulty sleeping in the first trimester

Short answer
Difficulty sleeping in the first trimester can follow hormonal and physical changes, nausea, urination, or worry, but persistent or severe symptoms should be discussed with a pregnancy-care professional.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Early-pregnancy reasons for poor sleep
Early pregnancy can bring pronounced daytime tiredness without making nighttime sleep easy. Nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, mild cramping, heartburn, vivid dreams, and needing to urinate can disturb rest. Changes in mood or worries about the pregnancy may keep the mind active. A new sleep problem can also have causes unrelated to pregnancy, such as stress, infection, an irregular schedule, or a breathing disorder. Difficulty sleeping does not by itself indicate a problem with the pregnancy, but the accompanying symptoms guide the next step.
Note sleep, nausea or vomiting, pain, bleeding, urination, medicines, and caffeine. Tell your maternity clinician about symptoms that are severe, new, or interfering with eating, drinking, work, or safety.
Pregnancy-conscious measures
Keep a regular wake time and take gentle daylight and movement during the day if you feel well enough. Eat small, suitable meals and ask your maternity clinician about managing nausea or reflux. Keep the room cool, use pillows for comfort, and reduce caffeine. Do not begin sleep medicines, herbal products, or pain relievers without checking that they are appropriate in pregnancy. If you wake to urinate, keep lighting soft and return to bed without checking your phone.
When to contact your care team
Contact your maternity care team promptly for bleeding, increasing or severe abdominal pain, fever, painful urination, repeated vomiting with difficulty keeping fluids down, or dizziness and faintness. Seek emergency help for severe pain, collapse, heavy bleeding, severe breathing trouble, or sudden confusion. For ongoing insomnia without warning signs, arrange a routine pregnancy review so safe options can be considered.
Questions to ask
Which medicines or remedies are safe for my sleep and nausea? Could reflux, urination, pain, or anxiety be contributing? What symptoms should prompt an urgent call?

Questions people ask
Is poor sleep common in the first trimester?
Sleep can change early in pregnancy because of tiredness, nausea, urination, discomfort, and emotional changes.
Can I take a sleep aid while pregnant?
Ask your maternity clinician or pharmacist first because medicine and supplement safety depends on the product and your health.
