Difficulty breathing and headache

A blocked nose, cough or fever can accompany a common cold, allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis or COVID-19. Heat exhaustion and dehydration can cause headache, weakness and faster breathing, especially after exertion or time in a hot setting. Dengue fever may include fever, marked aches, headache and worsening illness. Anxiety can create a sensation of air hunger alongside tension or headache, but breathing difficulty should not be attributed to anxiety until urgent physical causes have been considered. The pattern, speed of onset, fever, chest symptoms, exposure and fluid intake guide assessment.

Stop exertion, sit upright in a cool, well-ventilated place, loosen tight clothing and take small sips of fluid if you are alert and able to swallow. Avoid smoke and do not drive yourself if breathlessness is significant. Check your temperature if possible and record when both symptoms began, along with medicines, travel, heat exposure and any rash. Arrange medical advice if symptoms do not settle promptly or keep returning.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, inability to speak comfortably, blue lips, fainting, confusion, chest pressure, sudden weakness, a new facial droop, or a sudden severe headache. Get urgent assessment for high fever with worsening breathing, repeated vomiting, bleeding or a widespread rash. Children, older adults and people with heart or lung disease should be assessed early when breathing changes.

Ask what examination or tests are needed, whether infection or heat exposure is likely, how to replace fluids safely, and which changes mean you should return immediately.
