What should you know about Differin under the eyes?

Adapalene is a topical retinoid used mainly for acne. It changes how skin cells develop and can cause dryness, peeling, redness, stinging, or increased sensitivity, especially when treatment begins. The skin around the eyes is thinner than many other facial areas, and product can migrate through rubbing, sweating, or contact with pillows. Applying it close to the lash line can expose the eye itself and may lead to marked irritation.

A small amount that accidentally reaches the eye should be rinsed with clean, lukewarm water. Do not use adapalene on the eyelids unless a clinician has specifically instructed you to do so.

Apply adapalene only to the acne-prone skin your prescriber identified, using a thin layer on clean, fully dry skin. Keep a clear margin around the eyelids, inner corners, and lash line. Wash your hands afterward, and avoid layering it with other irritating products unless your clinician has planned that combination. A bland moisturiser can support the skin barrier, while daytime sun protection helps reduce additional irritation.

If dryness develops, pause and contact the prescriber for guidance about frequency or an alternative. Do not increase application because you want faster improvement.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe swelling around the eye, blistering, intense pain, spreading redness, or changes in vision. Rinse the eye and seek urgent care if vision is affected or discomfort continues after thorough rinsing. A clinician can distinguish medication irritation from infection, eczema, or another eye condition.

Ask whether adapalene is appropriate for the exact area being treated, how far from the eye to apply it, and what to use if peeling or burning starts. Mention contact lens use, eyelid symptoms, and every product applied near the eyes.
