Differin and melasma

Melasma causes darker, often patchy areas of facial skin and can become more noticeable after light exposure or irritation. Adapalene changes how skin cells turn over, but it may irritate the skin. Irritation can make uneven pigmentation harder to manage, particularly in skin that marks readily. A clinician may decide whether adapalene has a role alongside a targeted pigment plan, or whether another approach is more suitable.

Do not apply Differin to inflamed, peeling, sunburned, or broken skin. If it has been prescribed for acne, use only as directed and pair the routine with a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and consistent broad-spectrum sun protection. Avoid picking, harsh scrubs, and unsupervised mixtures marketed for lightening. Photographing the same area in similar light can help your clinician judge change, while a skin examination can distinguish melasma from other causes of facial darkening.

Seek dermatology advice if pigmentation changes quickly, becomes one-sided, bleeds, crusts, or develops a new raised or painful area. Prompt help is needed for facial swelling or breathing difficulty after applying a product. Arrange a routine review if the colour is spreading, treatment is causing persistent burning, or you are unsure whether the patches are melasma.
