Differin gel: what to know before using it

Adapalene acts in hair follicles, where it helps normalise the shedding of skin cells and can reduce the formation of comedones. It is used on acne-prone skin rather than as a spot treatment for only visible blemishes. Early dryness, redness, peeling, or stinging can happen as the skin adjusts. These reactions do not mean you should apply more; excess product is more likely to irritate than speed improvement.

Follow the directions supplied by your clinician or pharmacist. Apply a thin layer to clean, completely dry skin and keep it away from the eyes, lips, nostrils, and cuts. Use moisturiser, avoid harsh scrubs and strongly irritating products, and protect your skin from sunlight. If your skin is sensitive, ask whether a gradual schedule is suitable. Mention other acne medicines, eczema, allergies, pregnancy, or plans to conceive before starting.

Get medical advice for facial swelling, hives, blistering, severe burning, or a rash that spreads. Arrange a review if irritation prevents normal washing or continues despite pausing as advised. Seek help for severe or scarring acne, painful nodules, or an uncertain diagnosis instead of repeatedly increasing the gel.
