Differin and rosacea: what to know

Differin is a brand name for adapalene, a topical retinoid that changes how skin cells behave and is commonly used for acne. Rosacea-prone skin may already sting, flush, feel hot or react to products. Adapalene can add dryness, peeling, burning or redness, particularly when applied too often or to broken skin.

Rosacea has different patterns, including persistent redness, visible small blood vessels, bumps, pustules and eye symptoms. An acne-like rash is not necessarily acne, so using an acne medicine without a diagnosis can obscure the problem or worsen irritation.

If a clinician has advised adapalene, apply only the instructed amount to clean, fully dry skin and avoid the eyes, lips, nostrils and creases. Use a gentle cleanser and bland moisturiser, and protect skin from sunlight. Introduce changes gradually only as directed; do not layer several irritating products at once.

Pause and contact the prescriber if burning, swelling, marked peeling or redness is persistent. Do not use adapalene on sunburned or visibly damaged skin. A clinician may choose a rosacea-specific plan instead, depending on the symptoms and skin examination.

Arrange review if flushing is frequent, facial redness persists, bumps continue, or treatment causes worsening discomfort. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, blistering, severe eye pain, light sensitivity or vision changes. Eye symptoms need assessment because rosacea can involve the eyelids and the eye surface.

Ask whether your rash is acne, rosacea or both, whether adapalene is suitable for your skin, how often to apply it, and which moisturiser or cleanser to use. Ask what symptoms mean you should stop and whether a topical retinoid alternative has a role.
