Different types of laser hair removal

Short answer
Different laser hair-removal systems suit different hair, skin and treatment-area combinations, so a clinician should match the wavelength and settings to you.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main options
- Alexandrite, diode and Nd:YAG lasers
- Main target
- Pigment in the hair and follicle
- Outcome
- Long-term hair reduction, not guaranteed permanent removal
How the main types differ
Alexandrite lasers use a shorter wavelength and are often considered for lighter skin with darker hair. Diode lasers work at an intermediate wavelength and may be selected for a broader range of skin tones. Nd:YAG lasers use a longer wavelength that can be useful when treating darker skin, because it reaches the follicle with less absorption in the surface pigment. These are general principles, not a personal prescription.
Laser energy is absorbed mainly by pigment in the hair shaft and converted to heat around the follicle. Hair colour, thickness, growth phase, recent tanning, medicines and the body area all affect the plan. Laser treatment reduces hair growth; it does not remove every hair forever.
How to prepare and choose
At a consultation, disclose tanning, skin conditions, medicines and any history of unusual scarring or pigment changes. Ask which wavelength is proposed, why it suits your skin tone and hair, and whether a small test area is appropriate. Follow the clinic’s instructions about sun exposure and shaving. Avoid plucking or waxing before treatment if instructed, because the follicle needs to be present for the laser to target it.
Laser hair removal may also be discussed for recurring ingrown hairs or razor bumps, while conditions such as hirsutism or hidradenitis suppurativa need assessment beyond hair reduction. When to contact a clinician
Contact the treating clinic promptly if treated skin develops increasing pain, blistering, marked swelling, open areas, pus or rapidly spreading redness. Seek urgent medical help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or a severe allergic reaction. Persistent darkening or lightening of the skin also deserves review. Ingrown hairs that are painful, draining or repeatedly returning may need separate care.
Questions for your doctor
Which laser is suitable for my skin tone, hair colour and treatment area? What results are realistic for my hair pattern? How should I manage sun exposure, shaving and skin products before and after a session? What symptoms should make me pause treatment or contact you?

Questions people ask
Which laser is safest for darker skin?
A clinician may consider Nd:YAG technology because its longer wavelength can reduce surface-pigment absorption, but settings and individual assessment still matter.
Can laser hair removal treat ingrown hairs?
It may reduce hair growth that contributes to recurring ingrown hairs, but painful or infected bumps need clinical assessment.
