What should you know about different types of heart failure?

Heart failure with reduced pumping means the heart does not squeeze strongly enough. Heart failure with preserved pumping means the squeeze may look relatively maintained, but the heart is stiff and does not fill easily. The terms left-sided and right-sided describe where pressure or fluid backs up, although both sides can become involved.

Acute heart failure develops or worsens quickly; chronic heart failure persists and needs ongoing care. Hypertension and rhythm problems such as atrial fibrillation can strain the heart. Symptoms may include breathlessness, cough, fatigue, palpitations or swollen ankles.

Take prescribed medicines consistently and do not stop them without advice. Track changes in breathing, energy, ankle swelling and weight if your care team recommends it. Keep appointments so treatment can be adjusted before symptoms become difficult to control. Limitations on salt, fluids or activity should be personalised rather than copied from someone else.

A chronic disease review can check symptoms, medicines, blood pressure, rhythm and kidney-related monitoring. Report a clear change from your usual pattern promptly.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness at rest, chest pressure, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Sudden inability to lie flat because of breathing difficulty also needs urgent assessment.
