Short answer

Oral rehydration therapy replaces water and salts lost through diarrhea, helping prevent dehydration when you can drink and absorb the solution.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How it helps

Diarrhea removes fluid and electrolytes from the body. An oral rehydration solution contains a measured balance of water, salts, and glucose that supports absorption through the intestine. It does not remove the underlying cause of diarrhea, but it can help maintain hydration while the illness settles or is assessed. It may be useful with Gastroenteritis, Food Poisoning, Heat Exhaustion, or Rotavirus Infection. Dehydration can show as thirst, dry mouth, darker urine, dizziness, unusual tiredness, or reduced urination.

Using rehydration therapy

Follow the product instructions exactly, using the stated amount of safe drinking water. Do not make the mixture stronger or weaker, and do not add extra sugar or salt. Take frequent small sips; if nausea occurs, pause briefly and restart slowly. Continue breastfeeding when relevant, and eat small familiar foods as tolerated. Keep the prepared solution as directed on its packaging and discard it when advised. Oral rehydration salts are different from sports drinks and homemade mixtures, whose concentration may not be suitable. A pharmacist can help you choose and use the product.

When to seek help

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very little urine, blood or black stool, severe abdominal pain, or inability to drink. Get prompt medical advice if dizziness persists despite drinking, diarrhea is worsening, or a child, older adult, pregnant person, or person with chronic illness is affected. Heat illness with confusion or collapse is an emergency. Rehydration therapy should not delay assessment when warning signs are present.

Questions for a clinician

Ask which solution is suitable, how much and how often to take it, and how to adjust for age or medical conditions. Ask whether your medicines, kidney problems, or ongoing symptoms change the advice and when you should be examined.
