Diarrhea and Hyperthyroidism

Excess thyroid hormone can increase the body's metabolic activity and make the digestive tract move more quickly. This may lead to frequent bowel movements or loose stools. Other features can include feeling anxious, difficulty sleeping, excessive sweating, heat intolerance, night sweats, tremor, or palpitations. Diarrhea alone has many possible causes, so it does not establish hyperthyroidism. Blood tests and a clinical examination are used to assess thyroid function.

Replace fluids with frequent sips and choose simple foods while stools are loose. Keep a record of bowel frequency, appetite, weight changes, sleep, sweating, tremor, and heartbeat sensations. Book a medical appointment if diarrhea keeps returning or is accompanied by several overactive-thyroid symptoms. Take thyroid medicine exactly as prescribed and do not alter the dose based on bowel symptoms alone.

Seek urgent care for fainting, severe weakness, confusion, chest pain, trouble breathing, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt assessment is needed for blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, markedly reduced urine, or worsening dehydration. If you already have hyperthyroidism and develop a sudden severe illness with a racing heart, high temperature, or altered behaviour, treat it as an emergency.
