What should you know about DHI hair loss?

Short answer
DHI is an implantation approach rather than a diagnosis, so hair loss should be assessed for its cause before any transplant decision.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- DHI
- A placement method, not the name of a hair-loss condition.
- Possible causes
- Pattern loss, alopecia areata, infection, shedding, and traction can look different.
- First step
- Examine the scalp and establish the cause.
Separate the symptom from the technique
Hair loss can involve shedding, gradual thinning, broken hairs, or defined patches. Possible conditions include alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia, female pattern hair loss, scalp ringworm, telogen effluvium, and traction alopecia. Each has different clues and treatment needs, so the symptom alone cannot select a procedure.
If transplantation is appropriate, DHI may describe placing prepared follicular units with an implanter pen. It does not stop every form of active shedding and cannot replace treatment for infection, inflammation, nutritional problems, or a condition causing temporary loss.
A sensible first assessment
Note when the loss began, whether it is diffuse or patchy, recent illness or major stress, tight hairstyles, scalp itch or scale, and family patterns. Bring medicine and supplement details to a clinician who can inspect the scalp and donor area. Avoid starting prescription hair-loss treatment without discussing contraindications and monitoring.
If a transplant is discussed, ask how the cause will be controlled, how much donor hair is available, and what happens to surrounding hair over time. Follow specific instructions after any procedure, including gentle washing and avoiding friction. Finasteride treatment may be discussed for selected people, but suitability depends on the individual.
When hair loss needs prompt review
Arrange prompt assessment for sudden patchy loss, scalp pain, marked redness, pus, crusting, severe itch, broken hairs, or swollen glands. Seek urgent care for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or a severe allergic reaction. Rapid change after a new medicine or illness should also be documented for the clinician.
Questions to ask
Ask what pattern the examination shows, whether testing is needed, and which causes have been considered. If DHI is proposed, ask whether active loss is controlled, who performs the procedure, how the donor area is protected, and which non-surgical options could come first.

Questions people ask
Can DHI treat all hair loss?
No. It may suit selected cases, while active disease or temporary shedding needs cause-specific care.
Is sudden patchy loss suitable for self-treatment?
No. Sudden patches, scale, pain, or inflammation merit clinical assessment before cosmetic treatment.
