Hair Transplant: What to Know

Short answer
A hair transplant moves follicles from a donor area to thinning or bare areas, and careful diagnosis is needed before surgery.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How a transplant works
During hair restoration surgery, a clinician removes follicular units from a donor region, commonly the back or sides of the scalp, and places them into planned recipient sites. The design considers your hairline, density, hair direction, scalp condition, and the supply of donor follicles. New growth is gradual because transplanted follicles need time to settle and cycle into visible hair production.
A transplant treats the distribution of hair loss, not every reason hair may be falling. Male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss may continue around transplanted follicles. Sudden bald patches, scalp inflammation, or loss related to tight hairstyles may need diagnosis and medical treatment first. A consultation should examine the scalp rather than relying on photographs alone.
Preparing and recovering
Before choosing surgery, ask for a diagnosis, an assessment of donor density, and a realistic design for your current and future pattern. Tell the clinic about medicines, smoking, bleeding problems, allergies, and previous scalp procedures. Follow instructions about washing, exercise, sun exposure, and medicines after the procedure. Temporary redness, tenderness, swelling, crusting, or shedding can occur during healing.
Protect the healing scalp from rubbing and picking. Keep follow-up appointments so the team can check the grafts and surrounding hair. Non-surgical options may also be discussed, including PRP for hair loss or scalp micropigmentation, depending on the cause, hair characteristics, and your goals.
When to seek care
Contact the treating clinic if pain, redness, warmth, swelling, bleeding, or drainage is worsening rather than settling, or if you develop fever. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fainting, or rapidly spreading infection. Arrange a prompt assessment for sudden patchy loss, painful scalp, pus, or scaling, since these findings may need treatment before any transplant plan.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which diagnosis explains your loss, how many donor follicles can be safely used, how the hairline will be designed, what recovery restrictions apply, and how ongoing thinning will be managed. Ask who performs each stage and how complications are handled.

Questions people ask
Does a hair transplant treat all hair loss?
No. It can redistribute follicles, but the underlying cause and future thinning still need assessment and management.
When should I investigate hair loss before surgery?
Sudden loss, bald patches, scalp pain, scaling, or inflammation should be assessed before elective transplant planning.
