Short answer

A total-body DEXA composition scan estimates bone, lean tissue, and fat distribution, but the findings need clinical context and are not a stand-alone diagnosis.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the scan measures

A DEXA system passes two X-ray energies through the body and analyses how tissues absorb them. A total-body composition report may describe overall and regional estimates of bone mineral content, lean soft tissue, and fat tissue. Results can vary with hydration, positioning, movement, equipment, and the software used.

This examination is different from a focused bone-density scan, which is designed to assess fracture-related bone health at selected sites. A composition scan can describe distribution, but it does not explain why weight or tissue measurements changed.

Preparing and using the result

Follow the imaging centre's instructions. Tell the team if you may be pregnant, have recently had contrast material, or cannot lie still comfortably. Wear clothing without bulky metal and remove items when asked.

For comparisons over time, using the same centre and a similar protocol may make trends easier to interpret. Discuss the report with a clinician or qualified dietitian, especially if you are changing exercise, nutrition, or treatment. Do not use a single composition result to judge health in isolation.

When to seek care

A composition scan is not an emergency test. Seek urgent care for severe shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, or sudden weakness rather than waiting for a scan. Arrange a clinical review for unexplained weight change, persistent weakness, recurrent falls, or concerns about bone health. A history such as premature ovarian insufficiency may also change how bone assessment is planned.

Questions to ask

Ask: What question is this scan intended to answer? Do I also need a focused bone-density scan? Which measures will be reported? What could affect the result? Who will interpret it, and what action would follow a meaningful change?

Questions people ask

Does a total-body DEXA scan diagnose osteoporosis?

Not by itself. Osteoporosis assessment usually depends on the appropriate bone-density examination plus medical history and clinical interpretation.

Can the scan show where body fat is stored?

It can provide regional estimates of fat distribution, although results depend on the scanner, software, positioning, and the person being examined.
