Is a DEXA scan an X-ray?

Both examinations use X-ray energy, but they answer different questions. A standard X-ray creates an image of bones and can help assess a break, alignment, arthritis, or another structural change. DEXA sends two energy levels through selected areas and analyses how much is absorbed, producing an estimate of mineral density at sites such as the hip and spine.

The DEXA report supports an assessment of bone strength and fracture risk; it does not explain every source of pain and may not detect an acute fracture as clearly as diagnostic imaging. If an injury is suspected, the appropriate examination is chosen from the symptoms and physical findings.

Tell the imaging team if you could be pregnant, have metal implants, recently received contrast for another examination, or cannot lie in the required position. Follow instructions about supplements and clothing, and remove metal objects from the area being measured. Keep still while the scanner passes over you.

Once the report is available, discuss the measured sites and how the result fits with previous fractures, falls, medicines, and other conditions. Premature ovarian insufficiency may be relevant when your clinician reviews hormonal and bone health.

Do not wait for a DEXA appointment if you have severe pain after an injury, a limb that looks deformed, or inability to use it normally. Seek urgent care for new weakness, marked numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control with back pain. These concerns need prompt clinical assessment and may require standard diagnostic imaging.

Ask what your DEXA is intended to measure, whether you also need an X-ray for a current injury, which sites will be scanned, and when you will review the result. Ask how your medicines and fracture history affect the interpretation.
