What should you know about DEXA scan VFA?

VFA is an imaging add-on performed with some bone density examinations. It provides a side view of the mid and lower spine, where a vertebra can become compressed without causing obvious symptoms. The images may show changes in vertebral height or shape. VFA is different from the bone density result: one assesses bone mineral density, while the other looks at spinal structure.

The report may describe whether a vertebral deformity is suspected and whether another imaging test is needed. A finding does not by itself explain every episode of back pain, and an unclear image may need confirmation.

Tell the imaging team if you could be pregnant, have recently had contrast imaging, or cannot lie flat comfortably. Wear clothing without metal and follow the centre's instructions about belts, fasteners, and medicines. During the scan, remain still while the detector moves over you; the team can help you position safely.

Ask how the VFA result will be combined with your bone density result. Your clinician may review fracture history, height loss, steroid use, hormonal changes, and fall risk before deciding whether monitoring, treatment, or further imaging is appropriate. Premature ovarian insufficiency can affect bone health and may be relevant to that discussion.

Contact a clinician promptly for new severe back pain after a fall or minor strain, sudden loss of height, a rounded upper back, leg weakness, numbness, or difficulty controlling your bladder or bowel. Seek urgent care for severe back pain with new weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control. These symptoms need clinical assessment regardless of a previous scan.

Ask whether VFA was included, what the spinal images show, whether a suspected deformity needs confirmation, and how the result changes your bone-health plan. You can also ask when repeat assessment would be useful and which symptoms should prompt earlier review.
