How are DEXA scan values understood?

A report may show a bone-density measurement and comparison scores. One score compares your result with the expected bone density of a healthy young reference group; another compares it with people of a similar age and sex. The clinician considers which score is appropriate, which bone was measured, and whether the image was technically reliable. A lower value can indicate reduced density, but it does not by itself describe every person's chance of fracture. Results from different sites may not match.

Ask the requesting clinician to explain the wording and how it relates to your personal history. Take the report to follow-up, especially if you have had a fracture, take medicines that affect bone, or have a condition linked with bone loss. Keep earlier reports because change over time is interpreted using the same or comparable sites and equipment when possible. Continue prescribed medicines unless the clinician advises otherwise, and discuss exercise, nutrition and fall prevention as part of the wider plan.

Seek urgent assessment after an injury causing severe pain, deformity or inability to bear weight; a DEXA value cannot rule out an acute fracture. Contact the imaging centre before a scan if pregnancy is possible, you recently had contrast imaging, or you cannot lie flat. Arrange routine review if the report is unclear or unexpectedly different from an earlier result, so technical factors and clinical context can be checked.

Ask which score applies to you, which site produced it, whether the image quality was adequate, and whether you need repeat testing or treatment discussion. Ask how your fracture history changes the interpretation.
