What is a DEXA scan used for?

DEXA imaging estimates mineral density in selected bones, commonly the hip and lower spine. It can help a clinician investigate suspected low bone density, review bone health after a fracture, or monitor a known problem over time. It may be considered when medicines or medical conditions affect bone, including conditions associated with reduced ovarian hormone production. The report is one part of an assessment: age, previous fractures, medicines, mobility and other health factors also shape the care plan.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions, wear clothing that permits positioning, and mention pregnancy, implants, recent contrast imaging or difficulty lying still. Bring earlier reports and a list of medicines. Afterward, arrange a review with the clinician who requested the scan. They may discuss activity that loads bone safely, nutrition, fall prevention, treatment options or additional tests. A DEXA result should not be used on its own to change prescribed medicine.

Get urgent assessment for severe pain, a visible deformity or inability to use a limb after an injury, because DEXA imaging does not replace an acute fracture evaluation. Contact the centre ahead of time if pregnancy is possible or a recent contrast test may affect scheduling. For a concerning report, request a clinical explanation rather than trying to interpret a single value without context.

Ask what prompted the scan, which bones will be measured, whether the result will change your care, and when follow-up should occur. Ask what symptoms or injuries should lead you to seek help sooner.
