What should you know about a DEXA scan with a pacemaker?

A DEXA scanner uses low-dose X-rays to measure bone density. The device itself is not the same concern as an MRI, but its casing or leads may overlap part of an image. The technologist may adjust the scan area, positioning, or interpretation, and the report may mention any limitation.

A pacemaker does not explain a bone-density result. The result is considered with fracture history, medicines, hormonal health, and other factors. Keep your pacemaker identification card available, and mention any other implanted device or recent procedure.

When booking, state that you have a pacemaker and ask whether the centre needs device details. At the visit, show your device card and tell the technologist where the generator is located. Wear comfortable clothing without metal and follow instructions about supplements or recent contrast studies. You should not need to switch off or reprogram the pacemaker for a routine DEXA scan unless your treating team gives specific instructions.

During the scan, remain still and report discomfort from the position. Do not leave without knowing who will review the result and how it will reach you.

Contact the scan centre before attending if you are unsure whether your device can be accommodated or if you cannot lie in the required position. Seek urgent care for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, or new symptoms suggesting a pacemaker problem; these are not expected effects of a DEXA scan and need prompt assessment.

Ask whether the pacemaker could obscure a measurement, which sites will be scanned, and whether your cardiology team needs to be contacted. Ask when the result will be reviewed and how it fits with your wider bone-health plan.
