What should you know about a DEXA scan for osteoporosis?

Short answer
A DEXA scan measures bone mineral density and helps clinicians assess osteoporosis alongside fractures and other risk factors.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Measures
- Bone mineral density at selected sites.
- Interpretation
- The scan is considered with fracture and health history.
- Follow-up
- A results visit helps set prevention or treatment.
Reading the result
The scan commonly examines the hip and lower spine. A result suggesting osteoporosis is interpreted with your age, medical history, medicines and any earlier fragility fracture. Low density can exist without warning symptoms, while a fracture may be the first sign that bone strength needs attention. The scan does not explain every cause of bone loss, so your clinician may review vitamin D, thyroid health, kidney health and medicines.
The examination is brief and uses low-dose X-rays. Tell the imaging team about possible pregnancy and recent contrast imaging, and follow their preparation instructions.
What happens next
Book a results discussion rather than interpreting the scan in isolation. Treatment may combine fall prevention, appropriate resistance and balance exercise, adequate calcium and vitamin D, and prescription medicine when fracture risk warrants it. Bone Density Scan explains the test, while Bisphosphonate Therapy, Vitamin D Supplementation and Calcium Supplementation cover options your clinician may discuss. Ask for a plan that considers dental care, kidney function, swallowing problems and other medicines.
When to seek care promptly
Seek urgent assessment after a fall with severe hip, groin or back pain, inability to stand, or a shortened or oddly positioned limb. New severe back pain after a minor movement also deserves prompt review because a vertebral compression fracture can be subtle. Sudden pain with weakness, numbness, or bladder or bowel changes needs emergency attention.
Questions for your doctor
What did my hip and spine measurements show? Have I had a fracture linked to bone weakness? Which causes of bone loss should be checked? Is medicine recommended, and how will we monitor it? What lifting, balance and impact activities are suitable for me?

Questions people ask
Can osteoporosis be present without pain?
Yes. Bone loss often has no symptoms until a fracture occurs, which is why assessment and prevention matter.
Is a DEXA scan the same as an X-ray?
Both use X-rays, but DEXA is designed to quantify bone mineral density rather than create a general picture of anatomy.
