What should you know about DEXA scans and Medicare?

Short answer
DEXA scan coverage under Medicare depends on your plan, clinical indication, provider and location, so confirm eligibility before booking.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Coverage depends on
- Plan, indication, provider and location
- Check before booking
- Referral and authorisation rules
- Clinical purpose
- Assess bone mineral density
Why coverage can differ
A DEXA scan is a medical test that measures bone mineral density, but payment arrangements are separate from the clinical decision to order it. A plan may ask for a documented reason, a referral, an approved facility or specific billing information. Rules can also vary between countries and between public and private plans using a Medicare name.
A clinician may recommend testing because of fracture history, bone-affecting medicines, menopause-related changes or a condition such as Premature Ovarian Insufficiency. That recommendation does not by itself confirm payment eligibility.
How to check before booking
Call the number on your insurance or Medicare documents and ask whether the test is covered for your diagnosis, whether pre-authorisation or a referral is needed, which providers are recognised, and what you may need to pay. Ask the imaging centre to confirm the billing code and the report process. Keep the written response and check whether rules have changed before the appointment.
For the clinical side, DEXA Scanner explains the equipment and Bone Density Scan explains the examination itself. Do not skip a medically advised test solely because coverage is unclear; discuss alternatives with the ordering clinician.
When not to wait for an administrative answer
Coverage questions should not delay urgent assessment after a fall with severe pain, inability to walk or a visible deformity. Seek emergency help for new weakness, trouble speaking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. A DEXA scan is not the test used to assess every acute injury.
Questions for your doctor
Ask why the scan is needed now, what decision the result may change, whether a referral is required, and which facility can provide the report. Ask the clinic’s billing team which information your plan needs and what alternatives exist if authorisation is declined.

Questions people ask
Does a doctor’s DEXA referral guarantee Medicare payment?
No. A referral supports the clinical reason, but the plan may have separate eligibility, provider and authorisation requirements.
What should I ask the imaging centre?
Ask for the billing information, recognised-provider status, referral requirements, report arrangements and any expected patient charge.
