DEXA scan and injection: what to know

You normally lie on a scanning table while the detector passes over selected bones, often the hip and lower spine. There is no intravenous contrast in a routine bone-density examination. An injection may belong to a different test arranged at the same visit, or a service may use different wording for another imaging procedure, so check the appointment details rather than assuming. DEXA measures mineral density; it does not inject medicine and it is not designed to diagnose every source of pain.

Read the imaging centre's instructions and call if the booking mentions contrast, a tracer, or an injection. Tell staff about possible pregnancy, recent contrast examinations, medicines, supplements, implants and difficulty lying still. Wear comfortable clothing and remove metal items when asked. At check-in, confirm which examination is planned, how long it should take, and when the report will be sent to the requesting clinician.

If an injection was given for another examination, report trouble breathing, facial swelling, widespread hives, severe dizziness or fainting immediately. For a DEXA appointment itself, seek urgent care for a new severe injury, sudden inability to walk, or severe back pain with weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control. These symptoms need direct medical assessment rather than a routine scan.
