DEXA scans and implants: what to know

A DEXA scanner measures how X-rays pass through bone. Dense metal from a hip replacement, spinal fixation, screws, plates or another device can distort the reading in that area. The technologist may choose a different measurement site, exclude an affected region, or document the implant so the report is interpreted correctly. Bring details of the operation if you have them, including the body side and approximate date. An implant does not itself indicate weak bone, and a scan cannot assess whether an implant is loose or infected.

Tell the booking team and technologist about every orthopaedic implant, spinal procedure, surgical clip or other metal device. Mention if you cannot lie flat, have pain in a particular position, or use a mobility aid. Follow the centre's instructions about clothing and supplements. During the appointment, describe the implant location clearly and remain still only as comfortably possible. Ask whether the report will compare measurements from unaffected sites or earlier examinations.

Arrange prompt medical review for new pain around an implant, swelling, redness, warmth, drainage, fever, or a sudden change in the joint's function. After an injury, urgent assessment is needed for severe pain, deformity, inability to use the limb, or inability to bear weight. These concerns require clinical examination and are not answered by a DEXA scan.

Ask whether the implant changes the scan site, whether an alternative measurement is needed, and how your fracture history and implant history will be considered with the result.
