DEXA scan imaging: what to expect

During the scan, you lie on a padded table while an arm passes over the body. The machine compares how much X-ray energy passes through bone and soft tissue. The most common measurements are the hip and lower spine; another site may be chosen when needed. The scan does not show every cause of bone pain and cannot predict an individual fracture with certainty. A clinician interprets the result using your age, sex, fracture history, medicines and relevant health conditions.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about supplements and clothing. Tell staff if you may be pregnant, have recently had a contrast examination, or cannot lie still comfortably. Remove metal objects when asked. The test is usually straightforward, but staying still helps produce usable images. Afterward, ask when the report will be available and what action, if any, follows from the result. Keep a record of earlier scans so changes can be compared appropriately.

A DEXA scan is generally arranged routinely, but new severe back or hip pain after a minor injury, loss of movement, or inability to bear weight needs prompt medical assessment. Seek urgent help after a major injury, or for numbness, weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control with back pain. Do not wait for an imaging report when symptoms are sudden or severe.
