What should you know about Hologic DEXA scans?

A bone-density examination may report measurements for the hip, spine or another selected site. A body-composition examination may estimate fat and lean tissue. These are different uses of related technology. The clinician reviewing the report considers positioning, artefacts from metal or spinal changes, medicines and fracture history before explaining the finding. Comparing reports is clearest when the same site and compatible protocol are used.

Confirm what type of Hologic examination was ordered and which regions will be scanned. Tell the service about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, implants, recent contrast imaging and difficulty staying still. Wear clothing that allows positioning without metal. Keep your report and ask the requesting clinician to explain any unfamiliar terms rather than comparing your figures with someone else’s.

The scan itself is usually planned rather than urgent. Contact a clinician for a new fracture, severe bone pain, repeated falls or rapidly worsening mobility. Seek emergency help for collapse, severe breathing trouble, chest pain or sudden confusion. Do not wait for a DEXA report to address an acute injury or serious new symptom.

Ask whether your appointment is for bone density or body composition, which site is being assessed, and what action the report may guide. Ask how calibration, positioning and hormonal health, including Premature Ovarian Insufficiency, fit into the interpretation.
