What should you know about DEXA scan contrast?

Contrast is a substance used in some imaging tests to make particular tissues easier to see. Standard DEXA scanning is different: the scanner compares how two X-ray energies pass through parts of your body, commonly the hip and lower spine. You usually lie still on a padded table while the arm of the scanner moves over you.

Because the examination is designed to measure bone mineral density, it does not normally require an injection, drinking preparation, or a contrast allergy check. A DEXA report may also include body-composition information in some settings, but that does not turn it into a contrast study.

Wear clothing without metal fasteners if your centre recommends it, and tell the radiographer if you may be pregnant. Mention recent imaging that involved a contrast material or another test that could leave material in the digestive tract, because the team may advise a short interval before scanning. Follow the centre’s instructions about supplements and medicines rather than stopping anything on your own.

Contact the imaging department before the appointment if you have questions about a previous contrast reaction, pregnancy, or a recent examination. After a routine DEXA scan, seek urgent medical care for symptoms such as breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or fainting; these are not expected from the scan and need prompt assessment.

Ask which body areas will be measured, whether your scan includes a body-composition assessment, when the report will be available, and whether any recent imaging means the appointment should be rescheduled.
