What should you know about DEXA scan age range?

Short answer
A DEXA scan can be appropriate at different ages when bone-loss risk, a fracture, or a medical condition makes testing clinically useful.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why age is only one factor
Bone density changes through life, but age alone does not decide whether testing is needed. A clinician may consider a low-impact fracture, early loss of ovarian function, long-term steroid treatment, a thyroid or digestive condition, low body weight, smoking, heavy alcohol use, or a family history of hip fracture. The scan may be used to investigate a concern, establish a baseline, or monitor a known bone-health issue. The appropriate reference range also depends on whether the person is premenopausal, postmenopausal, or male.
Discuss your personal reason for testing
Make a list of fractures, medicines, operations, menstrual or hormonal changes, and relevant family history before the appointment. Tell the centre about pregnancy, recent contrast imaging, and metal implants. Ask what the scan is intended to answer and whether a different test or blood work is also needed. If you are younger than the usual screening group, explain any risk factor clearly; a referral can still be reasonable when the clinical question is specific.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt assessment after a fracture from a minor fall, new persistent back pain, or a sudden change in height. Seek urgent care after a major injury, or if back pain comes with leg weakness, numbness, or bladder or bowel problems. Do not wait for a routine DEXA appointment when symptoms suggest a serious injury.
Useful questions
Ask why testing is recommended now, which reference group will be used, whether medicines or conditions affect the result, and when the finding should be reviewed.

Questions people ask
Can younger adults have a DEXA scan?
Yes. A clinician may request one when a fracture, medicine, or condition raises concern about bone health.
Is DEXA only for older adults?
No. Age helps guide interpretation, while the reason for testing and individual risk also matter.
