What should you know about a DEXA fit scan?

Short answer
A DEXA fit scan may assess body composition and bone density, but it cannot define fitness by itself.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- May include
- Body composition and bone density
- Does not measure
- Fitness, endurance or balance directly
- Best interpreted with
- Symptoms, history and functional measures
What you may learn
A DEXA report can estimate lean tissue, fat tissue and bone mineral across selected body regions. It may be useful when a clinician is monitoring muscle or bone health, or when a trained professional is assessing changes alongside strength, mobility and nutrition. The label “fit scan” is not a standard medical diagnosis. A scan cannot measure endurance, balance, cardiovascular function or how you feel during activity.
Making the test useful
Confirm with the provider whether you are booked for bone-density testing, body-composition analysis, or both. Follow instructions about clothing, metal items, food and supplements. Tell the technologist about possible pregnancy, recent contrast material or difficulty remaining still. For meaningful comparisons, use the same type of equipment and similar preparation when clinically appropriate. Review findings with someone who can place them in your health context.
When to seek care
A DEXA fit scan is not a substitute for assessment of symptoms. Speak with a clinician about ongoing fatigue, weakness, repeated falls, persistent pain or unexpected weight change. Get urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, sudden confusion or new weakness on one side of the body.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what the scan is intended to answer, which measurements matter for you, and whether your result needs comparison with an earlier study. Ask how exercise, nutrition, medicines or a medical condition could affect the findings.

Questions people ask
Can a DEXA fit scan tell me whether I am healthy?
No. It provides selected tissue and bone measurements; overall health also involves symptoms, function, medical history and other assessments.
Should I exercise before the scan?
Follow the provider’s preparation instructions. Ask whether recent exercise could affect the comparison they want to make.
