What should you know about a DEXA composition scan?

Short answer
A DEXA composition scan estimates how bone mineral, fat tissue and lean soft tissue are distributed across your body.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What composition results show
The report may include whole-body values and separate regions, often comparing the trunk with the arms and legs. It can help describe change during a supervised nutrition, exercise or rehabilitation programme. Fat distribution and lean-tissue estimates are not a diagnosis of fitness or illness, and lean tissue does not equal muscle alone. Fluid shifts and differences in preparation can alter readings. Your clinician may place more weight on a pattern over time than on one isolated value, and may combine it with strength, function, symptoms and other tests.
Getting ready
Check the appointment instructions about meals, exercise, calcium supplements and clothing. Mention possible pregnancy, recent contrast imaging, implanted devices and any difficulty lying flat. Once positioned, stay still and follow the technologist's directions. For follow-up scans, try to use similar timing, clothing and preparation. Keep the report available when discussing goals, because the numbers are meaningful only when connected to why the scan was requested.
When to seek care
Arrange a clinical review for unexplained loss of weight, reduced strength, repeated falls or persistent tiredness; these symptoms may need assessment beyond a composition scan. Seek urgent care for severe breathing trouble, chest pain, fainting, or sudden neurological symptoms rather than waiting for routine results.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which measurements are reliable for your purpose, whether a bone-density scan is also needed, what change would affect treatment, and how often follow-up should occur.

Questions people ask
Does a composition scan replace a medical assessment?
No. It adds measurements that must be considered alongside symptoms, examination findings and the reason for testing.
Is lean tissue the same as muscle?
No. Lean tissue includes muscle but also water and other non-fat tissues.
