What should you know about a DEXA body composition scan?

Short answer
A DEXA body composition scan creates a tissue map that estimates bone mineral, fat tissue and lean soft tissue in the body.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Reading the report
Unlike a standard bone-density appointment, a body-composition assessment looks beyond bone strength. It may show total and regional estimates, including the amount of fat and lean tissue in the trunk and limbs. The numbers are estimates rather than a direct weighing or muscle biopsy. They can vary with fluid balance, recent activity, meals, clothing and positioning. A single report cannot decide whether someone is healthy, undernourished or sufficiently fit. Clinicians use the pattern with your medical history and the reason for testing, such as monitoring a structured nutrition or rehabilitation plan.
Making the result useful
Ask the imaging centre for its preparation instructions before attending. You may be asked to keep meals, exercise and supplements consistent or to pause a calcium supplement briefly. Wear clothing that allows accurate positioning and tell staff about possible pregnancy, recent contrast studies or an inability to lie still. During the scan, remain in the requested position. If you repeat the assessment, returning to the same centre and using similar preparation can make changes easier to judge.
When to seek care
Speak with a clinician if the scan was prompted by unintentional weight loss, ongoing fatigue, weakness, falls or a major change in appetite. Do not wait for a routine scan review if you develop severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, or sudden weakness; seek urgent medical help.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what each region shows, whether the result relates to your original concern, which changes would matter clinically, and whether bone density should also be assessed separately.

Questions people ask
Is body composition scanning the same as a regular DEXA bone test?
Both use DEXA technology, but body composition scanning reports tissue estimates while a bone test focuses on bone mineral density.
Why might two scans give different results?
Hydration, activity, food, clothing, positioning and analysis methods can affect estimates, especially when preparation differs.
