What should you know about dengue virus type?

Dengue viruses are grouped into distinct types, sometimes called serotypes. Infection with one type can provide lasting protection against that same type, but it does not provide the same protection against every other type. A later infection with a different type may need closer medical observation. The type cannot be identified reliably from symptoms alone; testing and local clinical interpretation may be needed. Dengue Fever can cause Fever, Headache, Muscle Aches and Joint Pain.

Arrange medical advice if you develop a febrile illness after living in or travelling through an area where dengue occurs. Tell the clinician about travel, previous dengue and medicines you take. Rest and drink fluids while awaiting advice. Use mosquito-bite protection during the illness. Do not self-treat with aspirin or ibuprofen, as these medicines may raise bleeding risk. Get urgent care for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, marked weakness, confusion, breathing difficulty, cold skin or reduced urination. Chills or a Headache can occur with dengue, but a symptom pattern cannot establish the virus type. Easy Bruising should be reported promptly, particularly when it appears with fever or other bleeding.
