Dengue type: forms, symptoms, and care

Dengue is caused by related virus types spread by infected mosquitoes. A person can have dengue more than once, and a later infection may behave differently, but symptoms cannot identify the virus type by themselves. Fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, and joint pain are common presentations of dengue. Testing and clinical assessment help determine the diagnosis and level of concern.

Rest and drink water or oral rehydration fluids in small, regular amounts. Use a clinician-approved medicine for fever and avoid aspirin or ibuprofen unless specifically advised. Keep a note of symptoms, fluid intake, urination, bleeding, and alertness. Protect yourself from mosquito bites with repellent, screens, or a net. Arrange a GP Consultation if dengue is possible, particularly when you have another illness, take regular medicines, or cannot maintain fluids.

Seek emergency assessment for severe stomach pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, black stools, blood in vomit, fainting, confusion, marked drowsiness, breathing difficulty, cold clammy skin, or very little urine. Easy Bruising or worsening weakness should also be discussed urgently. A change in fever does not by itself show which type of dengue is present or whether danger has passed.

Ask whether testing is needed, how your symptoms will be monitored, which medicines are safe, when to return for review, and what warning signs mean you should go directly to emergency care. Tell the clinician about any previous dengue illness.
