Dengue test after how many days of fever?

Early testing may look for material from the virus in a blood sample. Later in the illness, a test may instead look for the body’s immune response. A result can therefore depend on when the sample was taken, which test was used, and whether the illness fits dengue. A negative result early on does not always settle the question, especially if fever and other symptoms continue. Dengue can cause fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain or chills, but these symptoms also occur with other infections.

Arrange a clinical assessment if dengue is possible, and tell the clinician when the fever started, how it has changed, and whether you have travelled or live in an area where dengue occurs. Drink fluids in small, frequent amounts if you can. Use only medicines recommended for you; some pain medicines can increase bleeding risk, so check before taking them. Keep a record of temperature, vomiting, urine intake and any new rash or easy bruising. A GP consultation can help decide whether testing, repeat testing, or monitoring is appropriate.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, marked sleepiness or agitation, trouble breathing, faintness, or inability to drink. Do not wait for a test result when these warning signs appear. Symptoms can become more concerning as fever settles, so continue watching closely during that change.
