Dengue second time symptoms: what to know

Dengue is caused by related virus types. Having had dengue before does not make a new fever automatically dengue, but a later infection can become more serious in some people. Dengue Fever commonly presents with high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle aches and joint pain. Chills can occur as the temperature changes. Easy bruising or bleeding from the nose or gums deserves prompt medical attention. Symptoms alone cannot confirm the diagnosis; a clinician may use your history, examination and blood tests.

Rest and take frequent small drinks to help replace fluid lost through fever, sweating or vomiting. Record when the fever began, your temperature readings, urine output and any new rash or bleeding. Use only medicines advised by a clinician; avoid aspirin and ibuprofen until dengue has been assessed because they can increase bleeding risk. Prevent mosquito bites around an infected person so mosquitoes do not spread the virus to others. Arrange a GP Consultation promptly if dengue is possible, especially if you have had it before.

Seek emergency help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unusual sleepiness or restlessness, difficulty breathing, cold or clammy skin, fainting, confusion, black stools, vomiting blood, or bleeding that does not stop. Warning signs can appear as the fever settles, so a lower temperature does not by itself mean the illness is improving. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or confused.
