Dengue red rashes: what they can mean

A dengue rash may look flushed, blotchy or made of small red areas, and it can spread or fade as other symptoms change. Dengue fever commonly presents with fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain or chills; the skin finding needs to be considered alongside those symptoms. Red spots that do not fade when pressed, new easy bruising, or bleeding may reflect a need for medical assessment. Many other illnesses can also cause a rash, so colour and appearance cannot confirm dengue.

Take a clear photograph in good light and note when the rash began, where it started, whether it itches, and whether it changes after pressure. Keep the skin cool, avoid scratching, and drink regularly. Do not apply a new medicated cream unless a clinician recommends it. Tell your doctor about medicines, allergies, fever changes, vomiting, bruising and any bleeding.

Seek urgent care if the rash is accompanied by bleeding, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, breathing difficulty, cold clammy skin or very little urine. Do not wait for the rash to spread before seeking help. Arrange a GP consultation for a new unexplained rash, worsening symptoms or concern about dengue exposure.
