What is dengue called?

People may use dengue, dengue fever, or dengue virus when discussing the same mosquito-borne infection. The illness can range from a short febrile illness to a serious condition that needs close monitoring. A mosquito bite alone does not confirm infection.

Common presentations include fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, and easy bruising. These features are not unique to dengue, so a clinician considers symptoms, exposure, examination findings, and testing together.

Rest, drink fluids regularly if you can, and keep a record of symptoms and temperature. Use medicines only as advised by a clinician or label, particularly if bleeding is present or dengue is possible. Prevent more mosquito bites while ill so mosquitoes do not acquire and spread the virus.

Arrange a GP Consultation if you have compatible symptoms after living in or visiting an area where dengue occurs. Tell the clinician about travel dates, mosquito exposure, and any existing health conditions.

Go for urgent assessment if you develop severe abdominal pain, ongoing vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, black stools, confusion, breathing trouble, or extreme weakness. Worsening symptoms around the time a fever improves are also a reason for prompt review.
