What does a dengue mosquito look like?

Aedes mosquitoes often have a striped or banded appearance. They can breed in small amounts of stagnant water around homes, including water held in plant saucers, containers, or blocked drains. Their appearance does not prove that a bite transmitted dengue, and many mosquito bites do not lead to illness.

Dengue illness may include fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, or easy bruising. These symptoms overlap with other infections, so a symptom such as fever does not by itself identify dengue.

Reduce further bites by using screens, wearing clothing that covers the skin, and applying an appropriate insect repellent according to its label. Empty or cover containers that hold standing water. Note when the bite occurred and watch for new symptoms over the following days.

If illness develops, arrange a GP Consultation and mention recent mosquito exposure, travel, and any medicines you take. Do not rely on the mosquito’s markings to decide whether testing or assessment is needed.

Seek prompt medical care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, marked weakness, confusion, breathing difficulty, or inability to drink. A person who becomes more unwell as a fever settles also needs urgent assessment, because dengue can change during recovery from fever.
