Which insect spreads dengue?

A mosquito becomes infected after biting a person whose blood contains dengue virus. After the virus develops inside the mosquito, a later bite can transmit it to another person. Dengue mosquitoes often live close to people and may bite during the day as well as at other times, so nighttime protection alone may leave gaps. Dengue illness can include fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, joint pain, or easy bruising, but symptoms cannot identify the insect involved.

Use an age-appropriate insect repellent as directed, wear clothing that covers the arms and legs, and use window screens or a mosquito net when appropriate. Empty, cover, or clean containers that hold water, including plant saucers and outdoor vessels. If someone has fever after possible exposure, arrange a GP Consultation and protect that person from further bites. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which repellent is suitable for infants, children, pregnancy, or sensitive skin.

A mosquito bite alone does not prove dengue. Seek medical advice for fever or illness after likely exposure, particularly if headache, vomiting, marked aches, chills, or unusual bruising develops. Get urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, inability to drink, or extreme sleepiness. Emergency help is needed for collapse or difficulty waking.
