What should you know about dengue case presentation?

A dengue illness may start with Fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea, or a rash. Chills can accompany a fever. Some people have mild illness, while others become significantly unwell. Easy Bruising or other bleeding can be a concerning change. Symptoms and their timing help a clinician judge the next step, but they cannot confirm dengue on their own; other infections can look similar.

Rest and take frequent fluids if you can drink normally. Check your temperature and note the start, direction, and combination of symptoms. Use only medicines recommended for you by a clinician or pharmacist, because some pain medicines can increase bleeding risk when dengue is possible. Arrange a GP Consultation if you have a fever after travel or mosquito exposure, or if symptoms are not settling. Avoid mosquito bites while ill by using repellent, covered clothing, screens, or a net.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, black stools, vomiting blood, breathing difficulty, faintness, unusual sleepiness, confusion, cold or clammy skin, or very little urine. Do not wait for every symptom to appear. A person can worsen around the time a fever improves, so ask for clear follow-up advice even if the temperature falls. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with significant medical conditions may need earlier review.
