Can you have dengue without a fever?

A normal temperature does not by itself rule dengue in or out. Temperature can vary during an illness, and a reading may be affected by timing, fluids, or fever-reducing medicine. Notice the wider pattern: headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, unusual tiredness, nausea, or a rash can all be relevant. Easy bruising or bleeding needs particular attention. These symptoms are not specific to dengue, so they cannot confirm the cause on their own.

A clinician considers recent mosquito exposure, travel or local transmission, examination findings, and the timing of symptoms. Testing may be advised when dengue is a reasonable possibility.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and record symptoms and temperature readings. Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen unless a clinician specifically tells you to use them, because some illnesses with bleeding risk can become more complicated with these medicines. Paracetamol may be suitable for discomfort for some people, but check the label and ask a pharmacist or clinician if you have liver disease, take other medicines, or are caring for a child.

Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms persist, worsen, or follow possible exposure. Use mosquito protection while unwell so mosquitoes are less likely to bite you and pass infection onward.

Seek urgent medical care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, marked drowsiness or restlessness, trouble breathing, fainting, or inability to drink. Also seek prompt advice if you are pregnant, very young, older, or have a condition that affects immunity, bleeding, or fluid balance. A fall in fever does not always mean the illness is resolving.

Ask whether dengue testing is appropriate, which pain medicines are safe for you, how much fluid to take, and which symptoms should trigger emergency care. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, where you have travelled or lived recently, and any medicines you have taken.
