What should you know about dengue bite time?

The time between an infected mosquito bite and illness gives the virus an opportunity to multiply before symptoms start. Because the bite may be unnoticed, people often cannot identify an exact exposure time. A delayed fever is therefore possible even when the skin looked normal at first.

When illness begins, fever may arrive quickly with headache, chills, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea, or fatigue. The interval cannot predict how severe the illness will be, and an early symptom-free period does not guarantee that no infection occurred.

For several days after a plausible exposure, pay attention to fever, fluid intake, urination, vomiting, rash, bruising, and bleeding. Keep notes that include the exposure context and the date symptoms began. Drink regularly and rest. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen until a clinician has considered dengue, because these medicines may increase bleeding.

Seek urgent care for severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, black stools, faintness, confusion, breathing difficulty, or inability to drink. A temperature that falls while these symptoms appear still needs prompt assessment.

Ask when testing is most useful, how long to monitor after exposure, which medicines are safe for fever, and whether your travel or health history changes the advice. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, chronic illness, and medicines that affect bleeding.
