Is DCIS genetic?

Short answer

DCIS itself is not inherited, but an inherited gene change can raise a person's chance of developing breast cancer, including DCIS.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What DCIS describes
Abnormal cells contained inside a breast duct
Inherited testing sample
Usually blood or saliva
Useful appointment detail
Cancer types and ages at diagnosis in close relatives

The short answer

Most discussions about genetics focus on whether a person was born with a cancer-predisposition gene change, not on genetic changes found only inside the abnormal breast cells.

How genes relate to DCIS

DCIS means abnormal cells are contained within a breast milk duct. Those cells have acquired changes that affect how they grow, but such tumour changes are different from an inherited variant present throughout the body.

A blood or saliva test may look for inherited variants linked with breast cancer susceptibility. A positive result can influence discussion of future breast screening, the extent of surgery, and whether relatives might consider counselling. A negative result does not remove every breast cancer risk, because family history and non-inherited factors still matter.

What to do after a DCIS diagnosis

Give your clinician a family history covering breast, ovarian, pancreatic, and prostate cancers, including which relatives were affected and their age at diagnosis. This helps the team decide whether referral to a genetic counsellor is appropriate.

If testing is offered, counselling before the test can clarify which genes are being checked, possible uncertain findings, privacy considerations, and how each type of result might affect treatment. Do not delay an agreed biopsy or imaging appointment while gathering family details unless your treating team advises it.

When to contact your care team

Arrange a timely review if a new breast lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, or nipple change appears. After biopsy or surgery, seek prompt clinical advice for fever, worsening redness, spreading swelling, increasing pain, or fluid leaking from the wound.

Contact the genetics service if a close relative receives a new cancer diagnosis or a documented inherited-variant result, because that information may change which test is most informative for you.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your personal and family history meets local criteria for genetic counselling, whether results could change the proposed operation, and when testing should occur relative to treatment. You can also ask who will explain an uncertain result and what information relatives would need if an inherited variant is found.

Questions people ask

Does having DCIS mean my children will develop it?

No. A DCIS diagnosis is not passed directly to children. If testing identifies an inherited cancer-predisposition variant, relatives can receive counselling about whether targeted testing is suitable.

Can a genetic result affect DCIS treatment?

It can influence discussion of breast surgery and future screening, but it is considered alongside the size and distribution of DCIS, biopsy findings, general health, and personal preferences.

Is tumour testing the same as inherited genetic testing?

No. Tumour testing examines features of abnormal cells, while inherited testing looks for variants present throughout the body that may run in a family.
