What should you know about dating scan first trimester?

The sonographer looks at the pregnancy location, the developing embryo, cardiac activity when visible, and measurements used to estimate gestational age. The scan may also show whether there is one pregnancy or more than one. The estimated date can differ from a date based on the last menstrual period, especially when cycles are irregular or ovulation occurred later than expected. A very early scan may not answer every question, so a repeat assessment can be suggested.

Take the report to your maternity clinician and keep the estimated date with your pregnancy records. Ask whether the measurement is clear enough to plan the next appointment and whether another scan is needed. Dating is separate from screening for chromosomal conditions; your clinician can explain when screening options, including a nuchal translucency scan, fit your care plan.

Contact your maternity service promptly for heavy bleeding, worsening one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or feeling seriously unwell. These symptoms need clinical assessment regardless of what a scan previously showed. If the report says the pregnancy cannot yet be assessed, follow the arranged review rather than trying to interpret an image alone.

Ask: What gestational age does the measurement suggest? Is cardiac activity visible? Does the estimated date change my next appointments? Should I arrange repeat imaging or screening?
