Dark yellow urine with burning: what to know

A deeper yellow shade can occur when urine is concentrated, while burning during urination points to irritation of the urinary tract. Dehydration may make urine more irritating; see [Dehydration](/conditions/dehydration/). Burning can also occur with a bladder infection, an STI, stones, or irritation from scented products. Fever, frequent small voids, urgency, lower abdominal pain, or cloudy or strong-smelling urine add useful clues. Dark urine with yellow eyes or skin is a different pattern and may relate to liver inflammation such as [Hepatitis A](/conditions/hepatitis-a/) or [Hepatitis B](/conditions/hepatitis-b/).

Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has advised restriction, and avoid alcohol or products that sting the genital area. Do not use leftover antibiotics: the right treatment depends on the cause. Arrange a clinical review if burning lasts, returns, or comes with urgency, discharge, pelvic pain, or a new sexual exposure. A urine test can look for infection, blood, or other changes; testing for an STI may also be appropriate.

Seek urgent assessment for fever with chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, confusion, fainting, pregnancy with urinary symptoms, or inability to pass urine. Visible blood, severe colicky pain, or rapidly worsening illness also needs prompt care.
