What should you know about dark yellow strong smelling urine?

A strong smell can be more noticeable when urine is concentrated after sweating, waking, or drinking less than usual. Certain foods, vitamins, and medicines may change odour without causing harm. Smell plus stinging, urgency, frequent small amounts, pelvic discomfort, or cloudy urine needs consideration of a urinary infection. A dark tea or brown shade is different from ordinary deep yellow urine; especially with yellow eyes or skin, pale stools, nausea, or unusual tiredness, it may indicate a liver or bile problem. Colour and smell alone cannot confirm the cause.

Drink water at regular intervals if you have not been told to limit fluids. Observe the colour and smell over the following urinations, and do not force fluids if you have heart or kidney failure without medical advice. Review any recent changes in supplements, food, exercise, or medicines. Do not take antibiotics left from an earlier illness. Contact a clinician if the change does not settle with normal hydration, returns repeatedly, or comes with urinary symptoms.

Seek urgent help if you are confused, faint, severely weak, unable to drink, or passing very little urine. Fever with back pain, side pain, vomiting, or feeling acutely unwell needs prompt assessment. Yellowing of the eyes or skin, severe abdominal pain, or blood in the urine also warrants timely care. Seek advice sooner during pregnancy or if you have kidney, heart, or liver disease.
