Dark urine and gallbladder problems

Short answer
Dark urine may occur when bile flow from the gallbladder or liver is blocked, but dehydration and other conditions can look similar.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible clue
- Tea-coloured urine with yellow eyes or pale stools needs medical assessment.
- Useful observation
- Record changes in urine colour, pain, fever, vomiting, and fluid intake.
What dark urine can mean
Bile normally travels from the liver through small ducts into the intestine. A gallstone or inflammation near the gallbladder can interfere with that pathway. Bile pigments may then build up in the blood and be passed into urine, making it tea-coloured or brown. Pale stools, yellowing of the eyes or skin, itching, nausea, or pain under the right ribs can add useful context. Dark urine alone does not identify the cause; fluid loss, medicines, foods, liver inflammation, and blood-related problems can also change urine colour.
The gallbladder is one possible source of the problem, but a symptom cannot confirm a gallbladder diagnosis. A clinician may assess your history, examine your abdomen, and arrange urine or blood tests and imaging when appropriate.
What to do next
Notice when the colour changed, how much you are drinking, and whether the urine becomes lighter after fluids. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice, and avoid alcohol until the cause is clearer. Arrange a medical assessment if the colour persists, returns, or occurs with abdominal discomfort, pale stools, itching, or yellow skin. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and mention recent travel, illness, or intense heat exposure.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for severe or persistent upper-abdominal pain, fever with shaking chills, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, or yellowing that is rapidly worsening. These features can signal infection, significant bile blockage, or dehydration and need prompt assessment. Emergency help is appropriate if you cannot keep fluids down, feel very weak, or have trouble staying awake.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit a bile-flow problem, which tests can distinguish gallbladder causes from liver or urinary causes, and whether an ultrasound is suitable. You can also ask which warning signs should bring you back sooner and whether any current medicine or supplement could be affecting your urine.
